Qatar MMA Hosts Phenomenal First Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Tournament

Backed by a rock-hard program by coach Fabricio Moreira, Qatar is racing headlong to grow martial arts in the country, and it seems to be one pretty exciting ride. Occupying a small peninsula on the Arabian Gulf, Qatar has ever seen incessant participation and remarkable achievements in regional and international martial arts competitions, including the IBJJF Championships, Abu Dhabi World Pro’s, ADCC, and Desert Force, not to name a few.

As part of establishing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the country’s presiding martial arts facility, Qatar MMA, has hosted this Friday [May 27, 2016] the first of its kind and biggest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Tournament which saw participation of more than 150 local and international competitors.

4 fighters from Bahrain’s KHK MMA team took part of the competition, with 3 of them successful in earning trophies. Among them is Desert Force’s Hamza Kooheji who fought Callan Atirkson from the UK winning his match by 6 points difference.

Yousef Kooheji, Hamza’s brother fought Sheikh Nasser Nawaf in a great back and fourth match from which Youssef emerged victorious by one advantage. Abdulla Fayes fought against Sheikh Faleh Mohammed. Sheikh Faleh was up by 2 advantages with 30 seconds on the clock during which Fayes managed to open the guard, take the back and sink in a rear naked choke to end the fight.

A great performance from team KHK in Qatar’s no-gi matches.

The event also held a Gi tournament showcasing local talent who were eager to prove themselves early in their BJJ journey. A kid by the name of Samiel Ceara Carneiro stole the lights as he competed in both his own weight and open weight while belt, earning 8 submission victories in the adult division.

Fabricio, head coach of Qatar MMA and organizer:

“The event was a great success, I’ve been wanting to do this for a while and finally it came to life. We had more than 150 competitors of which almost a 100 were from team Qatar MMA. This is a great step for BJJ in Qatar, and that’s only the start. Of course none of this would have been possible without the support of Sheikh Feleg Mohammed Al Thani, Sheikh Nasser Nawaf Althani and Faleh Nawwaf Althani.”

Moreiro also informed ArabsMMA that a bigger event is in the works for October. Very promising news for the Qatari MMA scene which is definitely earning its spot on the martial arts map.
