In was what arguably one of the grandest fight cards this side of Vegas, the audience was treated to an evening of bone crunching finishes, ligament snapping submissions and unexpected results! Desert Force “The Final” blew the roof off the Boxing Arena in Amman, Jordan on Saturday (June 15, 2013) featuring a main event of Abdulkareem Al Selwady earning a vicious and memorable knockout win over Yousef “Polvo” Hamad in their Featherweight title bout.
This was the event everyone was waiting for. The sound in the Arena was deafening when Abdulkareem walked out to 50 Cent’s appropriately titled song “Ready for War”.
In the pre-lim to this fight, many had predicted that Abdulkareem would face an uphill struggle against Polvo. The Kuwaiti had previously submitted three opponents at Desert Force in a cumulative total of less than 4 minutes! Privately, many fans and coaches voiced their concerns that Polvo might be a number too big for Abdulkareem.
Polvo surprised many in the opening exchanges of the fight by throwing kicks and engaging the Muay Thai specialist Abdulkareem in a striking game. Abdulkareem was patiently looking for Polvo to throw his strikes before he would carefully and quickly pick his counter strikes. The Jordanian stuffed an initial takedown attempt and when he was indeed put on the ground was quick to look for a way up! Polvo succeeded in taking Abdulkareem down yet again, but this time had the youngster in his guard (at which point many fans were holding their breath). This was arguably the worst position Abdulkareem would want to be in!
Polvo began getting his limbs into position and struck when given the chance! Abdulkareem had attempted to get up and Polvo, in the blink of an eye, had Abdulkareem in a dangerous looking armbar! The Jordanian fighter bravely held on and broke free of the submission attempt (an audible sigh of relief could be heard in the Arena) and waited for Polvo to get back up.
Sensing the fight was nearing the conclusion of the first round, Abdulkareem took a bold gamble and threw a superman punch which barely connected with Polvobut followed that up with a vicious left hook right after which Polvo never saw coming! The hook could be heard around the arena and Polvo came crashing to the ground like a ton of bricks. Abdulkareem, ever the fighter, quickly jumped on the Polvo and delivered another two strikes to the head but they were superfluous (think Dan Henderson vs. Michael Bisping), the Kuwaiti was already out cold!!!
ArabsMMA KO of the night!
Result: Abdul Kareem El Selwady, Round 1, KO
