RIYADH – Mounir “The Sniper” Lazzez was not the only person in the building who believed that he had what it took to finish arguably the toughest pound for pound fighter in Desert Force, Mohammad Ghorabi.
After both fighters showcasing world class striking skills in the first round, Lazzez (3-0 Desert Force) unloaded on the challenger with sharp jabs and stinging right hands, pounding away until referee was eventually forced to call a stop to the bout at 4:27 of Round 2, making Mounir Lazzez the new Desert Force 77 KG champ.
The Welterweight title bout was the main event of Monday’s Desert Force 16 event at Green Halls, Riyadh, KSA. It aired live on MBC Action following the Prelims.
This fight was a creme de la creme for all the striking fans in the region. High kicks, low kicks, spinning kicks, flying knees, flying front kicks, you name it, these two warriors delivered it.
By the end of the second, Ghorabi was in a purely defensive mode, with Lazzez sensing that the finish was near. No longer content to throw one or two punches at a time, Lazzez moved in with a machine gun spinning elbow followed by a hard knee to the body. After that Ghorabi went wobbely to the canvas , Mounir continued with a volley of punches from top in the final minute of the round, prompting the Referee to move in just as Ghorabi collapsed into his arms.
Lazzez, showing great respect and sportsmanship went down on his knees checking on Ghorabi then turned to celebrate, then fell to his knees again thanking God for his win.
“I would like to Thank God first for this Win. I would also like to thank my family and Coach Ryan who gave me a lot of his time along with all my sparring partners and training partners at Team Nogueira Dubai. Supporting me all the way was Sheikh Tarek Alkasmi, Elias From Sansation and Mr.Faisal Al Merri. Thank you Desert Force for this opportunity, I hope I’ll defend this title 2-3 times soon.”
Mounir Lazzez is now the first Tunisian to hold the Desert Force Shield.
