The United Arab Emirates continues to host the most monumental Jiu Jitsu tournament in the capital city Abu Dhabi, welcoming players from 100+ countries. Participants are set to meet at IPIC Arena on the 20th of April, battling for the prestigious titles and increased prize fund of over AED 2 Million, again the largest in the history of Jiu Jitsu.
In a recent interview with Tatame, former UFC light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort, who trained BJJ with the Gracie’s, mentioned:
“You know why I never competed at the Jiu-Jitsu World championship? Shit, the guy competes and wins and doesn’t get any money? I think this is shitty! It is exploitation, a slavery! Jiu-Jitsu is a professional sport, not amateur. You pay to compete? I’ve always been against it. The medal does not pay my rent, ”
While many others critisized BJJ for being a sport in which you have pay to compete, and don’t get anything in return, the Abu Dhabi World Pro’s are here to say no. They return this April for their seventh event almost doubling the prize bucket since 2011!
