17,000 attendees roared and cheered as thousands of the best fighters from all over the world showcased their professional Jiu-Jitsu skills in Abu Dhabi’s First Gulf Bank (FGB) Arena. The Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2014 is the series sixth edition. As host to the most renowned Jiu-Jitsu championship, Abu Dhabi experienced five full days of intense fights and left the crowd wanting more. Out of 71 participating countries, many names of Arab winners flickered on the podium.
Starting with Emirati fighters who have collected 19 golds in the seniors and masters categories, crowd favorite Faisal Al Ketbi has stunned local fans as he earned the World Championship Belt in the brown belt open weight category. Silver Medal worthy performances from Hassan Al Rumaithi and Abdulaziz al Jaberi in the male blue purple Belt Adult Master Category also added to the UAE’s overall medal count.
Jordanian fighters from Team Source, Gladiators, and Team Mirza once again shined in international competitions bringing home an astonishing 8 medals for Jordan including a bronze medal for Team Mirza’s Zaid Saad Sami in the brown belt category, a gold medal for Malek Rafiq Hariri from Team Source (blue purple master), and another gold for Sami Muhi al-Jamal from Team Source (brown black master) . The team showed real skill in their performance.
Lebanese Ali Hemadi from Team Atos BJJ was an impressive winner over the Kazaki Serik Utenov in the blue purple masters division of the Abu Dhabi World Pro 2014. That is not to mention blue belt heavyweight division title which was held by Houmaine Seif Eddine from Morocco!
This only proves the fast growth that Jiu-Jitsu has been experiencing in the region. With the support of Arab leaders and sheikhs, this growth is nowhere near slowing down.
