Saulo Cavalari, a former Glory Light Heavyweight champion, and one of the best strikers in the world will be making his MMA debut under the Phoenix Fighting Championship banner.
After having publicized the transition earlier this year and eyeing a 2017 MMA debut, it has finally been officially announced. The Phoenix Facebook page has posted that Cavalari will take part in “Phoenix 3: London – UK vs. The World” on Friday, September 22 in Indigo at the O2, London, UK.
Cavalari holds an impressive 65-5 record in kickboxing, 18 of wins via knockouts. He moved to Curitiba, Brazil, to train at the Gile Ribeiro gym as he preps to venture into a totally different sport. The Brazilian striker will compete at 205 pounds in MMA. He has also competed in Brazilian Jiujitsu making him no stranger to the ground game. Saulo had however planned to make this move four years ago, but family issues altered his path.
He won’t be the first kickboxer nor the first glory champion to head into MMA.
Glory heavyweight champion Rico Verhoeven made a successful MMA debut back in 2015, and the kickboxing legend and former glory top contender Ghokan Saki has recently signed with the UFC.
Mixed Martial Arts attracts more and more elite fighters as it holds a higher margin of profitability. Inspired by the two kickboxing greats, Mirko Cro Cop and ( Alistair ) Overeem who transitioned and fought at the highest level of MMA, Cavalari is now on the same journey.
This is a great addition to the talent filled hybrid Phoenix 3 fight card. Check out the full up to date confirmed fights.
