Jose “Shorty” Torres secured the Titan FC Interim World Flyweight Title after dominating Abdiel Velasquez and finishing him in the second round via knockout.
The fight ended when Torres, who had pursued “The Nightmare” the entire fight relentlessly, landed a crippling left hook and a knee to the chin of Velazquez as he tumbled to the ground.
It was a perfect finish for Torres, who had entered the fight as an underdog, but made a mockery of the odds as he continuously landed hurtful right hands, leg kicks and knees to the body in the clinch.
He had forced Velazquez into a shell, weakened him with knees in the clinch, finally sensed the finish and capitalized immediately to win the title in style.
Afterwards he paid homage to H.H the Shaikh Khalid Bin Hamad Al Khalifa KHK MMA FOUNDER and KHK MMA, in a personal message reflecting his gratitude and humility as ever.
He said:
“I just wanted to say thank you for all of your support! If it wasn’t for you and KHK MMA’s support, I would’ve never even come close to winning this fight or even being signed to Titan FC. You made this all possible and I wanted to show my respect to the man who set the pathway for me! You have allowed me to get the best training, meet new people, and make history as a 3-0 fighter.”
Shorty’s title victory was, incredibly, his third professional fight, but those who know him know that his amateur career set him up for this success – a two-time IMMAF World Champion with 25 amateur victories out of 26.
In truth, he never looked like losing the fight from the moment the action began. He pursued a very cautious Velazquez, who looked to counter punch and he did land a left hand which cut Shorty’s eye open, and even a momentary takedown.
But these moments were fleeting and never once forced Torres to back up, as he closed off the ring beautifully and punished Velazquez every time against the cage, with kicks, knees and punches which sapped the energy from the Florida native.
The finish was devastating and will send a chilling message to the rest of the division that, if you want the title, you had better bring something very special, because this man is on a seemingly unstoppable warpath.
