It turns out the grudge match is going to have to wait. AUFC officials today announced that AUFC 5 welterweight headliner Maik Wegner (2-0 MMA) is suffering from an early stage of hernia and has been forced to withdraw from the highly anticipated AUFC 5 headliner opposite Ahmed Sami. The title bout has been rescheduled for AUFC 6, with the date to be confirmed.

A featherweight title fight between be Ahmed Faress vs Hassan Mandour, which was expected to serve as the co-feature of the event, will now be the main event of AUFC 5, which takes place on Oct. 16th at the AUFC Academy in Cairo.

Maik Wegner:

After AUFC 4 I really was looking forward to the opportunity to fight for a title but this time, it’s not the guy on the other side of the cage that was my biggest problem to get the win, but personal health issues I had to face and I am still facing. Doctors found a hernia at an early stage in my groin area and advised strongly to rest in order to not risk a severe injury. I am 36 years old and can’t allow myself to play around with my health like a 20 year old guy anymore. I am very grateful that AUFC offered me the title shot at AUFC 6 instead, and although I respect Ahmed Sami very much, I know this title is mine. Ahmed Sami is young, hungry and has a lot of talent, his career only just started, he needs to lose at AUFC 6 in order to grow and get stronger. I am almost at the end of my MMA journey and I won’t leave without being the first AUFC Welterweight Champion

Ahmed Sami:

I understand his injuries and that he had a war at AUFC 4. I respect Maik. Get well soon and i look forward to meeting you in the cage at AUFC 6, but he (MAIK) is punching well above his weight. I will be the first AUFC welterweight champion. Make sure you are ready. See you real soon.
