New Desert Force Lightweight Champ Mohamad Triki Earns Split, Dethrones Hamdi

Desert Force 16

Riyadh – Mohammad Triki was able to pick up a victory in his first title shot, scoring a split-decision win over the former champion Tareq Hamdi.

Triki (4-0 Desert Force) started the fight with much ease. Yet Hamdi appeared as though he may have been battling some nerves during the early stages of the bout, looking tight and not quite as quick with his punches and kicks as he’s been in the past. Triki’s talent was enough to keep him a step ahead of Hamdi (2-1) throughout the fight.

The lightweight bout was the co-main event of Monday’s event at Green Halls , Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It aired on MBC Action following prelims.

Both fighters showed hunger to finish the fight in the first round, with Triki attempting a standing guillotine that almost ended the bout and Hamdi going for his own triangle choke that put the Moroccan in danger.

Triki started to pick up the pace in round two, but still was wary of the takedown attempts. Triki controlled the action throughout the round, but Hamdi did have a moment where he landed a few good punches, yet the success was fleeting through the round. Third round was not different than the previous two with back and forth action from both sides. That had the critics questioning the decision. Did Triki do enough to dethrone the champ? Well, according to the judges the Moroccan accomplished his mission.

Triki appeared to be in control of the scorecards and did take two of the three for the split decision win 29-28, 28-29, 30-27.

After Haider Rasheed and Tareq Hamdi, Mohammad Triki is now the third Desert Force lightweight Champion.
