Omran Chaaban wins UAE Warriors Arabia Welterweight title

Omran Chaaban surprised everybody with his “against all odds” comeback against  Wisem Hammami. UAE Warriors 47: Arabia 13 headline bout turned out to be a hard-fought battle with a dramatic turnaround in the final round.

It was the first UAE Warriors Arabia Welterweight title defense by now-former champion, Wisem Hammami. The Tunisian fighter captured the belt by stopping Badreddine Diani at UAE Warriors 43: Arabia 12. On the other hand, Chaaban secured his title shot by stacking up a four-fight winning streak.

Wisem Hammami vs. Omran Chaaban fight recap

Round 1

Both fighters started with cautious striking with Hammami throwing low kicks and Chaaban choosing to utilise his punches. This continued through over the first four minutes of the fight when Hammami intercepted Chaaban’s leg. The former titleholder attempted a takedown, but the challenger threatened him with a standing guillotine choke. However, Hammami pushed hard enough to take them both to the ground near the fence. Chaaban was impressed with his strength and determination as he managed to stand up using a fence, clinch, and sprawl down back to the ground while maintaining his guillotine choke hold. Hammami kept his composure as he stood up, forcing the challenger to let go of the guillotine. They both kept their distance till the closing bell.

Round 2

The second round began the same way as the first one. Both fighters cautiously exchanged strikes until Chaaban threw a middle kick with Hammami responding with a left hook. This was enough to send the challenger on his butt. Former champion followed down to dish out some punishment but Chaaban countered with a takedown attempt from his knees. Hammami sprawled him down with ease, but Chaaban still was able to stand up. After some strike exchanges, Chabaan found himself pushed against the fence by Hammami. Both struggled inside the clinch almost until the end of the round.

Round 3

The third round took a surprising turn as it looked like the opening minutes of two previous outings. Almost no clinching, no takedown attempts, just two combatants exchanging strikes, occasionally switching positions in the center of the cage.

Round 4

Hammami picked up the pace and came out swinging from the get-go. Once again he put Chaaban on his butt, this time with a right hook. In one swoop he pinned him down with a sprawl and took his back. Instead of going for a submission, Hammami grabbed his opponent with a left hand and started punching him with a right. To Chabaan’s credit, he managed to stand up and after some backpedaling, he attempted another takedown. It was easily defended by Hammami, who initiated a clinch and pushed Chabaans back to the fence. For the next two minutes, both of them were switching their position against the fence and throwing punches. The second half of the round went similarly to the previous one with some strike exchanges in the center of the cage.

Round 5 – Omran Chaaban makes his comeback

This time Chaaban took the initiative with an instant takedown attempt. Hammami tried to oppose him with his strength, but Chaaban pushed him nonetheless, locking an Arm-triangle choke in the process. After being flattened out Hammami tried to defend himself with bridges and punches to Chaaban’s side. It took a few seconds to make him tapout.

Despite being knocked down twice and getting his takedown attempts defended with ease, Omran Chaaban pulled out a surprise submission win in the fifth round. This was a showing of iron will and determination which resulted in the crowning of a new UAE Warriors Arabia welterweight champion.
