While the UFC has already held two major events in Abu Dhabi, Dubai was the Emirate of choice for ONE FC, and the response from its cosmopolitan population was huge. A sellout crowd cheered every punch, kick, submission and takedown, and the local press was glowing in its approval in a country plainly hungry for more MMA. ONE FC is coming back in March!
August 29 was definitely a night to remember; ONE FC (One Fighting Championship) took the Middle East, and for the very first time- by storm: with a full house, the world-famous league held an unforgettable MMA event at Dubai World Trade Center with three world title fights on a nine-bout card. In the main event, lightweight champion Shinya Aoki took on UFC vet Kamal Shalorus. In the co-feature undefeated Olympic wrestler Ben Askren battled reigning welterweight champion Nobutatsu Suzuki. The card also featured a featherweight title fight between challenger Jadamba Narantungalag and champion Koji Oishi and the return of former UFC star Roger “El Matador” Huerta.
And here we go again, another massive event scheduled for ONE FC on Arab soil! Mohamed Walid, 21, was be the sole UAE and sole Arab representative at One FC 19 “Reign of Champions” and he managed to lock a spectacular first round armbar on Filipino opponent Vaughn Donayre. ONE FC returns this March with more local and arab names promised on the card. Dubai is the lucky city to boast an MMA hub spot, and gives the chance of a lifetime for local fighters to finally shine on the professional scale; Victor Cui, founder and CEO of ONE FC stated it clearly:
“We’re delivering local heroes on a global scale to a standard of entertainment many wouldn’t have seen before”.
