For the first time in UFC history, the UFC is set to promote the first female fight inside the world famous octagon. On Feb. 23 in Anaheim, Calif., UFC women’s bantamweight champion “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey faces Liz “Girl-Rilla” Carmouche in the UFC 157 main event. Carmouche, who is an American of Lebanese origin (8-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) is currently riding a two-fight win streak after a successful appearence in Invicta FC promotion. 7 out of Carmouche’s eight wins have ended inside the distance making her a definite threat to Rousey .
Hey look, I respect Ronda. She’s done so much for the sport of women’s MMA. I’m never going to take anything away from her. But for those people who think I’m going to get armbarred quick, all I can say is, they could be in for a surprise.
Rousey (6-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) has enjoyed a relatively fast rise to stardom after winning the Strikeforce women’s bantamweight title in March. Rousey famous for trash talking before her fights is approaching this bout differently.
I like Liz,” she said. “She’s a Marine, I’m not going to be able to intimidate this girl. The prefight intimidation stuff won’t work, I won’t have that advantage I usually have over my competition … It’s a positive event and I don’t mind there being no arguments. It sells itself. It’s history.
This fight brought up all kinds of reactions starting from Media to UFC fans all around the Globe.
Some viewed this as a great achievement for female fighters to join the Highest ranked MMA organization , others didn’t like this new at all. The idea of having Females in the UFC , and as a main event in a stacked card like this one was displeasing for the UFC public.
The UFC 157 main card also features three past champions. Former UFC titleholder Lyoto Machida faces former two-division PRIDE champion Dan Henderson in a light heavy weight bout. The winner of which could be looking at a 205-pound title bout against the winner of Jon Jones vs. Chael Sonnen next April.
Additionally, former long-time WEC kingpin Urijah Faber takes on Ivan Menjivar in a bantamweight rematch. This will definitely be a battle for the fans.
