UFC 280: Oliveira vs. Makhachev results and recap

UFC 280

UFC 280 was a highly anticipated fight card. The event took place on Saturday, October 22th at Eithad Arena in Abu Dhabi. In the headline bout, former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira fought Islam Makhachev to determine a new title holder=.

The new lightweight champion was crowned at UFC 280

The lightweight title was vacated prior to UFC 274 due to Oliveira failed attempt at making weight. The former champion and Dagestani challenger met inside the octagon to determine, who will be the new king of the division.

Islam Makhachev kept his word and dominated the Brazilian from the beginning. In the first round, he took Oliveira down. It looked like ‘Du Bronx’ was fine with that scenario. However, Makhachev managed to underline his dominance on the ground forcing Oliveira to defend against his submission attempts.

In the second outing, Oliveira switched to his striking, but Makhachev answered with his own strikes. He sent the Brazilian to the ground with his right punch and followed him to the ground. There he dished out some punishment and secured his win with an arm-triangle choke.

Aljamain Sterling successfully defended his bantamweight title

The co-main event was a UFC bantamweight title affair. Aljamain Sterling has successfully defended his belt against T.J. Dillashaw. During the broadcast, it was revealed that the former champion suffered a shoulder dislocation prior to the fight.

Dillashaw displayed his fighting spirit and kept fighting despite the injury. It turned out that his courage went unawarded as Sterling kept beating him until Marc Goddard stepped in to stop the fight in the second round.

Sean O’Malley shocked the world by beating Petr Yan

In another bantamweight clash, Sean O’Malley faced his toughest opponent yet, Petr Yan. The two of them went the distance, blooding and battering each other through all three rounds. Judges awarded O’Malley a split-decision win.
