Egypt Shines at the African Games MMA Tournament: A Sweep of Gold, Silver, and Bronze

Accra, Ghana – 13 March 2024 – The African Games made history with its landmark Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) tournament, which concluded yesterday in Ghana. The event featured final competitions and medal ceremonies, marking a significant moment on the continental Olympic stage.

National teams from across Africa, including Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Ghana, Libya, Mauritius, Nigeria, Sudan, Togo, and Uganda, competed fiercely for top honors in their respective categories.

The finals were not without drama, as Holonou Song from Benin and Muammar Felfel from Libya were disqualified for violations of the Global Mixed Martial Arts Association’s (GAMMA) Code of Conduct. This led to a bout between Sookhoo Bhirsing and Kotoka Felix to determine the silver and bronze medalists in the 56.7 KG / -125 Lbs category.

Egypt emerged as a dominant force in the tournament, securing three medals across various weight categories, showcasing the depth and talent of their national team.

  • In the 47.6 KG category, Dalia Abodeff of Egypt clinched the gold medal by defeating Peter Winifred Agara of Nigeria via unanimous decision.
  • Mohamed Ashaat of Egypt added to the tally with a bronze medal performance in the 93.0 Kg category,
  • Additionally, Mohamed Elsayed won the silver medal in the 77.1 Kg category, demonstrating skill and determination.

The African Games MMA tournament highlighted the growing popularity and competitive level of the sport across the continent. With athletes from various countries showcasing their abilities, the event was a testament to the spirit of competition and camaraderie among African nations.

ABOUT MMA IN THE AFRICAN GAMES

The amateur rules MMA tournament played out from Sunday 10 to Monday 12 March under the Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts (GAMMA), joining 6 other demonstration sports among 30 total disciplines. 8 of these are holding qualifiers for this summer’s Paris 2024 Games.

The 13th edition of the four-year, multi-sport event runs from 8 to 23 March, organised by the African Union (AU), the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), the Association of African Sports Confederations (AASC) and the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa (SCSA).

Officially recognised by the Association of African Sports Confederations (AASC), GAMMA holds the vision of seeing the sport accepted internationally by the Olympic movement and one day entering The Olympic Games. Inclusion in the African Games provides a milestone for the sport.
