“Rampage’s” feud with “The Cannon”
The animosity between the two started at Triller’s Triad Combat event, which took place back on November 28, 2021. Each of them served as a captain of teams consisting of MMA fighters and boxers respectively. The rivalry happened in a triangle-shaped ring under inconvenient hybrid rules. The ruleset allowed for the usage of any punching technique from MMA, for example, spinning back fist, and clinching. It also required fighters to wear special, open-finger gloves.
For each win, a victorious team was rewarded with points. The final score was: Team MMA: 14 points and Team Boxing: 11 points.
During the entire evening, both Jackson and Briggs were trading verbal barbs trying to prove that one combat sport is superior to another. Even back then both agreed to meet up inside a boxing ring.
Since then a war of words has been taking place on social media. The two fighters met again face to face during the Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou weight-ins in Saudi Arabia. After some more talking both of them admitted that their potential fight was in the works.
Quinton Jackson vs. Shannon Briggs – tale of the tape
“Rampage” has an MMA professional record of 38 wins and 14 losses. Twenty of his wins came by the way of knockout. A former UFC light heavyweight champion holds KO victories over such notable names as Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva. In Bellator, he also used his punches to stop Joey Beltran and Christian M’Pumbu.
Jackson also fought under K-1 rules two times against Cyril Abidi. He knocked him out in the first round at K-1 World Grand Prix 2002 in Fukuoka. Their rematch bout at Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye 2002 ended with a unanimous decision win for “Rampage.”
Shannon Briggs sports a professional boxing record of 60 wins, 6 losses, 1 draw, and 1 no-contest. “The Cannon” has knocked out his opponents on 53 different occasions. He’s the former IBU, NABA, NABO, WBC WBC FECARBOX, and WBC Latino heavyweight champion. He fought for the main WBC heavyweight title a few times. Back in March 1998, he was TKO’d by then-champion, Lenox Lewis in the fifth outing. On October 16, 2010, he boxed with Vitali Klitschko for a full twelve rounds, but the judges awarded the bout to the Ukrainian champion.
Excluding the WBO heavyweight belt, Briggs never lost the other titles and retired while enjoying a nine-fight winning streak.
Briggs, like his future opponent, also tested himself under the kickboxing ruleset. He knocked out Tom Erikson at the K-1 World Grand Prix 2004 in Saitama.
